・engulf：巻き込む、飲み込む
※involveよりもっと圧倒されているニュアンス。
・faction：派閥 [fǽkʃən]

・allegedly：（真偽は別として）申し立てによると、伝えられるところによれば、～したとされている [əlédʒidli]

・Japan Bank for International Cooperation：政府系金融機関の「国際協力銀行」（略称JBIC「ジェイビック」）
※日本企業が海外で事業を展開する際に必要な資金を投資したり融資したりしている。

・promise：成功しそうな兆し、見込み、有望な、さい先がいい
ex) It asked the companies which countries they see as promising investment destinations in the next three years.

favor：好意、友好、親切心、支持（ラテン語から）

go out of favor：好まれることがなくなる → 流行遅れになる、廃れる
ex) Formal table manners have gone out of favor. 「正式なテーブルマナーは廃れてきた。」
curry favor with ～：～にお世辞を言う、ごまをする
ex) She always curries favor with the boss.「彼女はいつも上司の機嫌を取っている。」
※curry「（馬などの毛を）くしを使ってとく、手入れする」、curry favor「馬の手入れをして、馬の飼い主に気に入られる」→「ごまをする」curry favorをcurry flavor「カレー味」と間違えないよう注意・・・。

※「バチカン市国」としても、「ローマ教皇庁（バチカンの政府にあたる）」としても使われる。

【 豆知識：キリスト教の影響を受けた単語 】
Christmas：クリスマス
Christ「キリスト」＋ mas「ミサ」
※英語で「ミサ」はmass [mǽs]（「ミサ」はラテン語発音をそのまま用いた模様）
「ミサ」には「送り出す」といったニュアンスが含まれている（ラテン語でmittere「送り出す」の過去分詞形missaから）。
mission：使命、派遣
ラテン語のmiss-「送る」＋ sion「ある使命をもって」→「使命、（使節団などの）派遣」
キリスト教の伝道のための派遣が、missionだった。
message：メッセージ
ラテン語のmess-「送られた」＋age（動作の結果）
「送られてきた知らせ」→「メッセージ、伝言」
crucial：極めて重大な
cross「十字架」（の変形）＋ 形容詞を表すパーツal
