円安 ３２年ぶりの水準に
<語彙・表現>
・weaken against ～：（外国為替の話題では、比較する通貨に対して）下がる
・the 150 level：１５０円台
ex) The yen briefly weakened to the 150 level against the U.S. dollar on Thursday for the first time in 32 years.
・depreciate：価値が下がる [dipríːʃièit]
・the greenback：アメリカドル [gríːnbæ̀k] ※下記参照
ex) The Japanese currency has depreciated about 30 percent against the greenback this year.
・speculate：臆測する、推測する
※確かな根拠のない予想を表す。投資の文脈では「投機」のニュアンスも含む。
・the U.S. Federal Reserve：連邦準備制度理事会（アメリカの中央銀行にあたるFRB） ※下記参照
・key：主要な、重要な、鍵となる
・interest rate：金利 ※下記参照
・decades-high：過去数十年で最も高い
※似た形式の例 decades-long：何十年も続いている、centuries-old：何世紀もの歴史がある
ex) Investors are speculating the U.S. Federal Reserve will continue to raise key interest rates to tackle the country’s decades-high level of inflation.
・push up：押し上げる
※名詞としてpushup（あるいはpush-up）なら、体を押し上げることから「腕立て伏せ」
・yield：（債利回り、（株式の）配当利回り
・10-year U.S. Treasury note：１０年ものアメリカ国債 ※下記参照
ex) That has pushed up the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury note to 4 percent.
・gap：隔たり
・yen selling：円売り
ex) It’s the prospect of a wider gap between Japanese and U.S. interest rates that’s accelerating yen selling, as investors seek higher yields in the United States.
<豆知識：金利や為替などに関する語彙（まとめて）>
the U.S. Federal Reserve
アメリカの中央銀行にあたるFRB（Federal Reserve Board）「連邦準備制度理事会」。
FRBの他に、U.S. Fedという表現もよく使われる。
key interest rate
主要金利（中央銀行が市中の銀行に資金を貸し出す際のいくつかの金利）。
これらの金利を調節することで中央銀行は金融を引き締めたり緩和したりする。
アメリカでは「フェデラルファンド金利」が、日本では日銀の「無担保コールレート」が主要な金利にあたる。
inflation, deflation, stagflation
・inflation = in + flation（物値が上がり続ける現象）
・deflation = de + flation（物価が下落し、経済が収縮する現象）
※ “flation" はラテン語の動詞 “flare" 「吹く」から来ており、空気で膨らむ／抜けるイメージから景気の状況に使われる。スタグフレーション（景気低迷下で物価が高騰する現象）。
・stagflation ＝ stagnation「（景気の）停滞あるいは低迷」とinflationを組み合わせた語。（景気低迷下で物価が高騰する現象）
10-year U.S. Treasury note
１０年ものアメリカ国債。
Tを大文字で表すTreasury noteには、Department of the Treasury「（アメリカ）財務省」が発行する「アメリカ国債」（財務省債券）の意味がある。
１０年もの国債の利回りは長期金利の代表的な指標となっている。
<豆知識：ドルの別の言い方>
the greenback [gríːnbæ̀k]
アメリカドルの別の言い方で、本来は「ドル紙幣」を指す古風なスラング。
南北戦争中の１８６０年代からアメリカで発行されたドル紙幣の裏面が緑のインクで印刷されていたことで、greenbackと呼ばれるようになった。
buck [bʌ́k]
「ドル、１ドル」という意味で、日常的に使われるカジュアルな言い方
buckは「雄ジカ」という意味がある。一説には、植民地時代に先住民と開拓者がbuckskin「雄ジカの毛皮」を物々交換の単位としていたことから、buckがお金を表すようになったとも言われている。
※英語で「金、現金」を表すものには、breadやdoughといった言葉もある。

ex) This comes after items such as Shine Muscat and Ruby Roman grapes were found growing in other countries.
・revise：（法律などを）改正する
・the Plant Variety Protection and Seed Act：種苗法
・take effect：（法律・規則などが）効力を生じる、発効する、施行する
ex) The revised Plant Variety Protection and Seed Act took effect last year.
・seedling：苗
ex) It bans taking seeds and seedlings abroad without permission.
・The agriculture ministry：農林水産省（正式にはMinistry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries）
ex) The agriculture ministry says the new entity will help product developers with the registration process for each country.
・help A with ～：Ａが～するのを助ける、支援する

・prefectural governments：都道府県（庁）

・authorize：（正式に）許可する、認可する
・cultivation：栽培
ex) It will collect license fees for varieties authorized for overseas cultivation.
<豆知識："fruit" の様々な意味>
「果物」（全般）
数えられない名詞で “fruit"
fruit and vegetablesと言うと、「果物」全般を指します。日本語のニュアンスに近いのはこちら
「果物」（種類を意識して捉える場合）
複数形で “fruits"
“fruits and vegetables" と言う場合は「いろいろな種類」を意識している使い方になる（バナナもリンゴもあるというように）。
少し特殊な意味合い。
「成果」
fruitの語源「土壌の産物」というラテン語から。
bear fruit：実を結ぶ、努力などが実る
ex) The project is the fruit of so many people’s care and dedication.
「そのプロジェクトは、とてもたくさんの人の心遣いと献身の成果です。」

・tariff：関税 [tǽrif]
ex) Canadian tariffs on Japanese beef exports will be lifted next month.

・make the most of ～：～を最大限に活用する

・attended by ～：～によって参加された、～が参加した

・restaurateur：料理店の店主 [rèstərətə́ːr]
※フランス語由来の単語。restauranteurというつづりもあるが、上記のつづり・発音が一般的。
ex) They included Canadian government officials and restaurateurs.
・cattle：畜牛（家畜として飼われている集合的な「牛」）
※cowも広義では「蓄牛」で、狭義では「雌牛」
・marbled：さしの入った、霜降りの
ex) Tasso explained that Iwate wagyu cattle are raised using sustainable agricultural methods and their meat is beautifully marbled.

・feature：特徴とした、主なものとして使った
ex) Participants sampled dishes such as sukiyaki and sushi that featured beef.
・where：具体的な場所を受けているわけではなく、（well-balancedの状態について）「～というところ、～という具合」のようなニュアンス
ex) It’s … yeah … well-balanced, like I said, where, you know, it kind of melts in your mouth.

・きれいに霜降り状になっている：beautifully marbled
・口の中でとろける：melt in one’s mouth

そば 輸入価格高騰で国産にシフト
<語彙・表現>
・buckwheat：（そば麦としての）そば、そばの実
※「そば粉」：buckwheat flour、そば粉から作る細長い麺である「そば」：soba noodles, buckwheat noodles

※より明確に「原材料」と言う場合は、raw materialという表現もある。
