※この意味では通例は数えられない名詞

“Ｈ３”ロケット 打ち上げ失敗
<語彙・表現>
・flagship：旗艦 → 主力の、最も重要な [flǽgʃìp]
ex) We begin in southwestern Japan, where the country’s new flagship rocket has failed on its debut flight.
・lift off：（ロケットが）打ち上がる
・ignite：点火する
ex) It lifted off Tuesday morning, but once it reached space, its second engine did not ignite.
・steadily：順調に
ex) The H3 rocket rose steadily from Tanegashima Space Center in Kagoshima Prefecture.
・end ～：～を終わらせる
・destruct：（打ち上げ後のロケットなどの意図的な）爆破、自爆

<豆知識：接頭語 “mal" は好ましくない状態を表す>
mal-で始まる単語は「誤って、不良な、悪意の」など、好ましくない状態を表すことがある。
例
・malfunction：不具合、機能不良
・malnutrition：栄養不良
・malaise低迷、沈滞、不快感
・malice：悪意、恨み

<豆知識：星に関する接頭語と星占いに影響された単語>
astro-やaster-が付く単語は、「星」に関係する。
例
・asterisk：アステリスク（＊）
・astronaut：宇宙飛行士
・astronomical：天文の
・astrobiology：宇宙生物学
コチラにもあり。
昔は星占いで国にとって重要なことなどを決定していたので、星占いは重要だった。
そこから、星占いに影響された単語もある。
disaster
もともと古イタリア語のdisastroで、dis-は「離れて」＋astroはaster「星」
「幸運の星から離れて」→「悪い星のもとに生まれた」→「天災、災害、災難、不幸」
influence
「星が発する霊的な力が人の中に流れてきて人間の行動や運命などを左右する」→「影響」
influenza「インフルエンザ」
中世の時代に「天体の配置が悪いことが原因で疫病がはやる」と考えられていたため、中世ラテン語のinfluentia「影響」から、influenzaという病名として使われるようになった。

ex) Seoul has unveiled a plan to settle a wartime labor issue with Japan.
・affiliated：関連のある、提携した
・foundation：財団
・damages：賠償（金）

・in place of ～：～の代わりに
ex) South Korean Foreign Minister Park Jin announced that a government-affiliated foundation will pay damages in place of Japanese companies to those who say they or their relatives were forced to work during World War II.

<豆知識："pay" の基本的な意味>
payは、ラテン語のpacare（平静な状態に戻す）
↓
「お金を貸している人などを満足させる」
↓
「品物や労働に対して金銭を支払う」といった基本的な意味になった。
例
・pay damagesb / pay compensation：賠償金を支払う
・pay attention
・pay compliment
※「～を支払う」の時はforを入れないと「代償を払う」になってしまうので注意。

<豆知識：大きさの表し方>
・in width：幅で
ex) 幅２メートル：2 meters in width / two meters wide
・in heightは「高さで」をそれぞれ表します。ここでは、
ex) 高さ２メートル：2 meters in height / two meters high
・～ across：〜の直径で
・～ tall：〜の高さで
・～ long：〜の長さで
