・but ～：～を除いて

“not only A but also B"：Aであって、さらにB
“not A but B"：AではなくBだけ
【 “not A but B" の “not" や “but" の位置】
Exerciseの2個目で、"not" “but" の位置が難しい。
１番の"My girlfriend ～" は、付ける文章の両方に “give me" があって共通だったので、
“My girlfriend gives me not orders but self-confidence."
としてみたら、間違いと指摘された。
動詞の前に置くんだよ、ということで、ちょっと理屈が分からなかったがとりあえず了解した。
正しくは
“My girlfriend doesn’t give me orders but gives me self-confidence."
【
“but" の前のカンマ】
“not only A but also B" “not A but B" ともに、教材の中で文によって “but" の前にカンマがあったりなかったりするのでそれを質問。
→ あっても無くてもどちらでもｏｋ。
【 “not A but B" の例文の自作】
“I don’t like cook but like eat."
レッスンの感想
この教材の予習をし、さてお気に入りの先生は・・・とリストを見たら、ちょうどトルコのH先生が前のレッスンを終えたところだった。
いいタイミングでレッスンをお願い出来て良かった。
細かくフィードバックを入れたり、内容に関連して突然質問をしてくれたりと、創意工夫のある非常に良いレッスンをしてくれる。
人格的にも優しくて穏やかで親切なので、日本人学習者にはピッタリだろう。
今日の内容のうち、"not only A but also B" は結構ライティングでもスピーキングでも使っている。
でももう一方の方はほとんど使わないので、今日は違いを整理した。
“not" “but" の位置がねぇ・・・ちょっと腑に落ちない部分もあるけれど、まぁいいことにしよう。
今回の教材では、Aidanのアシスタントという人物描写が相当ひどかった。
上司のIDカードを紛失しておきながら、ほっといてスポーツバーでご飯を食べている？？
英文例を作り出すためとは言え、キャラ設定がかわいそうだね。
