・bribery：贈収賄（贈る・受け取るの両方に使う）

・chairman：会長
　ex) The arrested individuals are former organizing committee executive Takahashi Haruyuki, former chairman and ・・・.

・favor：（相手に対する）有利な取り計らい、便宜
　※"favor" は文脈によってさまざまなニュアンスで使われる：親切な行い、好意、賛成、支持、引き立て、えこひいき
　ex) Prosecutors suspect that Aoki’s side asked Takahashi to provide favors in relation to sponsorship and licensing contracts.

・wrongdoing：悪事、不正（行為）、犯罪
　※"deny any wrongdoing"：犯罪などの疑いをかけられた人が嫌疑を否認していることを伝える際によく使われる表現
　ex) He’s said to have denied any wrongdoing.

<豆知識：favorの良く使われる表現>
・do someone a favor：人の頼みをきく
・Can I ask a favor?：お願いがあるのですが」

　ex) The Islamist group took the capital, Kabul, as U.S. forces withdrew from the country.

・in accordance with ～：～に従って、～にのっとって
・interpretation：解釈
　ex) Taliban leaders have governed in accordance with their interpretation of Islamic law.

・secondary schoo：中等（教育の）学校
　ex) Girls aren’t allowed to attend secondary school.

・no other ～：ほかのいかなる～も～ない
・legitimacy：法にかなった正当なものであること、正当性、正統性、合法性 [lidʒítəməsi]
　※単に合法というだけでなく、合理的で筋が通っていることというニュアンス
　ex) No other country has recognized the legitimacy of Taliban rule.

・crumble：崩れる、砕ける、崩壊する
　ex) Afghanistan’s economy has crumbled.

・takeover：（権力などの）奪取
　ex) It hasn’t been able to receive international aid, a large part of the budget before the takeover.

・The Islamic State group：過激派組織ＩＳ＝イスラミックステート
・step up：次第に強める
・Shia Muslims：イスラム教シーア派
　ex) The Islamic State group has been stepping up its attacks against Taliban members and Shia Muslims.

・renowned：名高い、高名な、有名な
　ex) World-renowned Japanese fashion designer Mori Hanae has died at the age of 96.

・motif：モチーフ（文学や芸術などの作品において繰り返し登場したり何度も使われたりする主題やデザイン） [moutíːf]
　ex) She was known for her signature butterfly motifs.

・make a name for oneself：名声を得る、名前が売れる
・acclaim：絶賛、（拍手）喝采
・present：贈る、提示する、上演する、コレクションを発表する
　ex) After making a name for herself as a designer of costumes for movies, she won international acclaim with her collection presented in New York in 1965.

・dub：（何かの特徴をとらえて、別名やあだ名などで）呼ぶ
　ex) It was dubbed “East meets West.”

・haute couture：（フランス語）オートクチュール（高級な仕立て服） [òʊtkuːtˈʊɚ]
　ex) Mori became the first Japanese to be listed in Paris as an official designer of haute couture.

<豆知識："signature" の別の意味>
signature：特徴づけるような、トレードマークとなるような
には、「お決まりの、いつもの」という意味もある。

　ex) When the singer flashed his signature smile, all the girls in the audience screamed.
   （その歌手がお決まりの笑顔を見せると、観客席の女性が一斉に黄色い声を上げた。）

イギリス英語ではラジオやテレビ番組のテーマ曲を “signature tune" と呼ぶことがある（番組の雰囲気を特徴づけるということから）。アメリカ英語では、“theme song" と言うのが一般的。

・pay a price：報いを受ける、代償を払う
・stick to one’s principles：自分の主義・原則を貫く
　ex) But Liz Cheney has paid the price for sticking to her principles.

・primary election：中間選挙の前に各政党で党員が候補者を選ぶ「予備選挙」
・expose：（これまで見えなかったものを）はっきりと示す、露呈する、さらす
・degree：度合い、レベル
・the degree to which ～：～する程度・度合い
・machine：（アメリカの政治の話題で使われる言葉で、政治家を当選させるため機械のように動く）（集票）組織、その中枢的な役割を果たす人（たち）
　ex) Her defeat in a primary election exposed the degree to which Trump still controls the Republican machine.

・House：= the House of Representatives　アメリカの）下院
・House Republican：下院の共和党（議）員
・impeach：弾劾する
　ex) Cheney was among 10 House Republicans who voted last year to impeach Trump for his role in the attack on the Capitol.

・be in the race：（スポーツレースやスポーツ大会での）競争に加わっている、（選挙に出馬していて）勝つ見込みがある
・ahead of ～：～を前にして、～に先立って
・midterm elections：中間選挙
　ex) Only two are still in the race ahead of midterm elections in November.

・go along with ～：～に付き合う、～に同調する
　ex) The path was clear, but it would have required that I go along with President Trump’s lie about the 2020 election.

・enable：～を可能にする、助長する、容易にする、許す、認める
・unravel：せっかく編んだ編み物をほどく→（長い年月をかけて作り上げたものを）少しずつだめにする、なし崩しにする [ʌnrǽvəl]
・democratic：民主制の、民主主義の [dèm･ə･krǽ･tik]
・Republic：共和国、ここではアメリカ合衆国
　ex) It would have required that I enable his ongoing efforts to unravel our democratic system and attack the foundations of our Republic.

・capture：〔試合や競争で～を〕勝ち取る、攻略する
・a third of the ～：～の３分の1
　ex) She only captured a third of the votes.

・lose out to ～：～に負ける、～に座を奪われる
・back：支持する、支援する、応援する
　ex) She lost out to a candidate backed by Trump.

<豆知識："prin" “prim"で始まる単語は “first" の意味が含まれている>
「最初の」「第１位の」「最高の」などのニュアンスになる。

“prin" “prim"で始まる単語の例
・primary：最初の
・principle：最初から存在する、最高に重要な原理 → 根本的な「原理、原則、基本的な方針、信念」
・primary school：最初に行く学校 → 小学校
・principal：学校で一番偉い人 → 校長
・prime minister：（内閣の中で）第１位の大臣 → 総理大臣
・primitive：（この世界で）最初の時代の → 原始的な
・princess / prince：王女・王子 → 王の娘や息子という、第１位の地位を持つ人
・prime time：テレビの視聴率が一番高い時間帯（＝和製英語の「ゴールデンタイム」）

　ex) An ultra-high-definition image of Pablo Picasso’s “Guernica” has gone on public display here in Tokyo.

・depict：描写する、描く
・devastation：荒廃、惨状
・Nazi：ナチス
・bombing：爆撃
・Civil War：内戦、内乱
　ex) It depicts the devastation caused by indiscriminate Nazi bombing of the town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War.

・measure＋数値：～には（その数値の）寸法がある
　※数値とともに使われるhigh「高さがある」やwide「横幅がある」は、数値の後ろに置かれる。long「長さがある」やdeep「深さがある」も同じ。
　ex) The painting measures about 350 centimeters high and 780 centimeters wide.

・house：（建物などの中に）保管する、収納する、場所を与える
　ex) Housed in a museum in Spain, the work was shot using an NHK 8K camera.

・life-size / life-sized：実物大の、原寸大の
　ex) The image on display in Tokyo appears almost life-size on a 325-inch screen.

・stroke：ひと筆の動き
　※同様に、ゴルフクラブやテニスラケットの「ひと振り」、水泳では「ひとかき」
・brushwork：筆遣い
　ex) Visitors can see the detailed strokes in his brushwork.

・retouchは「修正、レタッチ」で、ここでは「描き直し
　ex) “We can even see traces of retouches Picasso made to his work.

<豆知識："image" の色々な意味>
「画像」「映像」「写真」「姿」「心に映る像（イメージ）」「印象」など、さまざまな種類の「像」を表す。
実際に目の前に形として見えるものであれ、心の中に思い描いたものであれ、そのような「像」は全て “image"。
鏡やカメラの中に映っている人の「姿」、そのような姿を捉えた「写真」や「肖像画」なども “image"。

　ex) She looked at her image in the mirror.   「彼女は鏡に映った自分の姿を見た。」

日本語の「イメージ」と同じ意味でも使う場合は、
「イメージアップする」（和製英語）：improve one’s image
「イメージダウンする」（和製英語）："hurt one’s image" “harm one’s image" など

　ex) The scandal hurt the politician’s image.   「不祥事で、その政治家はイメージダウンした。」

日本語で言う「イメチェン」は “change one’s image" になるが、英語の意味では行いや性格が変わる意味になるので使わないようにしないといけない。
例えば髪型を変えてイメチェンした場合は、 “You got new look." と言えば良い。
