巨大エネルギーの“宇宙線” 発見

※地球へ降り注ぐ陽子などの小さな粒子で、発生源となった天体でどんな現象が起きたのかを知る手がかりとなる。

ex) Astronomers say they’ve discovered a cosmic ray so powerful that only one gram of the particle would contain enough energy to destroy the Earth in theory.
・detector：検出器、検出装置

・pick up：（エネルギーや信号などを「感知する、捉える」という意味
ex) The researchers said a detector picked up something super energetic in May of 2021.

【 豆知識：地球を表現する3種類の言い方 】
※以前の豆知識「地球の"the"」も参照
the earth：「（私たちの周りに広がる）この大地」
「土、（地面の）地」→「この大地」（地上から見渡した時の「（私たちの周りに広がる）この大地」というニュアンス）
↓
the Earth：「（私たちが住む）このアース（という星）」
私たちが住んでいる星という主観的な「地球」（人類が空から丸い地平線を眺めるようになり、「この大地」が一つと認識した感覚でtheを付け固有名詞として頭を大文字にしたのかもしれない）
↓
(theを付けない)Earth：「アース（と呼ばれる太陽系第３惑星）」
１つの天体としての客観的な「地球」（人類が宇宙に複数ある惑星の１つと認識し、惑星だけの名前（固有名詞）ということで、Eは大文字になった）
※ほかの惑星の名前にtheが付かないのと同じように、theは付けない（人の名前にtheを付けないのと同じ感覚）。
宇宙関係や天文学では、theを付けないEarthが標準的な言い方

ex) A prominent Hong Kong activist says she will probably never return to the city.
・pro-democracy：民主主義を支持する、民主化を求める
※pro-は「～を支持する、～に賛成する」という接頭語
ex) Chow was jailed in 2020 for her role in pro-democracy protests.
・periodically：定期的に、周期的に
・report：（ある場所に）出向く、出頭する
ex) She was scheduled to return to Hong Kong this month, as she is required to periodically report to the police.
・Umbrella Movement：雨傘運動
※香港で２０１４年に香港政府トップの行政長官を選ぶ選挙をめぐって、若者を中心に民主化を訴えた抗議運動のこと。催涙弾を発射する警察に対し、学生たちが雨傘を持って抵抗したことから。
ex) Chow is widely known as one of the leaders of the Umbrella Movement, where young people in Hong Kong called for democratic elections.
・condemn：強く非難する、とがめる
・irresponsible：無責任な
・challenge：挑戦する、挑発する、たてつく
・law and order：法と秩序、治安
ex) Hong Kong police condemned her move in a statement Monday, saying it is “irresponsible” and challenges law and order.

・note：述べる、言及する
・evolve into ～：～に進化する
・elaborate：手の込んだ、精巧な
※動詞では「～を念入りに作る、～を練る」
・high-end：最高級の、特上の
※high-end/fancy restaurant：高級レストラン
ex) The company notes that the normally simple items have been evolving into elaborate and colorful creations, featuring shrimp and other high-end toppings.
・wrapped with ～：～で包まれた
ex) Onigiri are plain rice wrapped with dried sheets of seaweed and contain fish or other items.
・specialize in ～：～を専門とする、～に特化する」です。ちなみに特定の種類の商品を専門に扱う「専門店」なら、specialty storeで表すことができます。
・gourmet：グルメ志向の、美食家向きの、美味の、（食べ物が）高級な、高品質な [guərméi]
※名詞としては「美食家、食通」
ex) The company says the number of restaurants in Japan specializing in the new gourmet-style items is growing rapidly in large cities.
・sales：販売、売り上げ
※個々の取り引きとしての「売却」を表す場合は、単数のsale
・(be) on the rise：上昇傾向にある、上昇している
※c.f. (be) on the declineや(be) on the decrease：下降傾向にある、下落している
ex) It notes that sales are on the rise and the items are even appearing in countries outside Japan.
・symbolize：象徴する
・the past year：過ぎ去ったその年＝この１年
ex) It is given to foods that symbolize social trends of the past year.
・search numbers：（インターネット上の）検索数
ex) The selection is based on search numbers for gourmet websites and consumer surveys.
【 豆知識：フランス語由来の語彙の難しい発音 】
・buffet [bəféi]
・collagen [kɑ́lədʒən] 「カラジェン」みたいな
・croissant [krəsɑ́nt] 「クォロアッサ～ントゥ」みたいな（人によって様々）
・genre [ʒɑ́nrə] 「ジャンラ」みたいな

ex) It includes rolling back a law by the previous administration that would eventually ban smoking completely.
・outline：概要を述べる
・coalition：連立内閣、連立政権、連合軍

・bring about ～：～をもたらす、～を引き起こす
・do it tough：苦境にあえぐ、つらい思いをする
※主にオーストラリア英語で使われる慣用句。
ex) “It is ambitious, but it is necessary in order to bring about the relief to New Zealanders, who have been doing it tough for way too long.”
・repeal：（法律などを）廃止する、撤廃する
ex) Luxon’s “100 Day Action Plan” says the government will repeal a ban on selling tobacco products to anyone born in 2009 or later.
・critic：反対者、批判的な意見を持つ人
※「批評家、評論家」という意味のときは大抵、literary critic「文芸評論家」、film critic「映画評論家」、music critic「音楽評論家」のように評論する分野を示す言葉が付く。
・tax revenue：税収
・at the cost of ～：～を犠牲にして
※ = at the expense of ～
ex) Local media report critics are saying the move would increase tax revenue
at the cost of public health.
【 豆知識：ニュージーランドでの学校の区分け 】
ニュージーランドの教育制度では、
・primary school：５歳から１０歳の児童が通う６年制の学校
・intermediate school：１１歳、１２歳の児童が通う学校
ただしprimary schoolの中には、intermediate schoolを含めた８年制の一貫教育校もある模様。
【 豆知識：「読み書き算数」の語彙 】
ニュース文
“Another aim is to ban the use of mobile phones in schools and require primary and intermediate schools to teach reading, writing, and mathematics for one hour per day."
reading, writing, and mathematics：読み書きと数学（日本語の「読み・書き・そろばん」のニュアンス）
※mathematics「算数、数学」は通例、不可算名詞として単数扱い。
「読み書き算数」という意味では、reading, writing, arithmeticという表現もあり、皆reやriの音節を強く発音することから、the three Rsと言う。
