レアジョブ 実用英会話6 Ch.2-2 Beliefs and Superstitions①
今回の内容（「Understand」まで)
【習った表現】
・believe in something：to think that it is true or correct.
例) My friend’s mom believes in the superstition that cutting your nails at night can lead to an early death.
・An old wives’ tale：an idea that was commonly believed in the past but is now thought to be untrue.
例) In the Philippines, they say you shouldn’t wear a red shirt when there’s a storm. I think that’s just an old wives’ tale!
・be good/bad luck：Something is good/bad luck if it makes good/bad things happen to people.
例) In Japan, people think that seeing a spider in the morning is good luck.
レッスン中上手く言えなかった「夜爪を切ると親の死に目に会えない」を今回の学習フレーズで表して
“In Japan, we believe in the superstition that if you cut your nails at night, you might miss your parents’ final moments."
とか
“In Japan, we believe in the superstition that if we cut our nails at night, we won’t be able to be with our parents when they die."
※「you」を使う場合は一般論を話している感じになり、「we」を使う場合はより日本人としての立場を強調して話している印象になる。
“miss someone’s final moment" 、"be with" の部分をパッと思いつくのが難しい。
日本の有名な迷信を挙げて
（自分が知っていて「そういえばあったね」を抜粋）
・"When you sneeze, it means someone is talking about you."「くしゃみをすると誰かが噂している」
・"Sticking chopsticks upright in rice is bad luck"「箸を立ててご飯に刺すと不吉」
（これは it resembles a funeral offering. だから）
・"Sleeping with your head to the north is considered unlucky"「北枕で寝ると縁起が悪い」
（これは it’s how the dead are laid to rest. だから）
・If a tea stalk stands upright in your tea, it means good luck.「茶柱が立つと縁起がいい」
レッスンの感想
今日のG先生（写真と全然違う・・・替え玉！？）は、非常に気さくで話しやすかった。
生徒としてはしゃべってナンボだし、元々「教材を2回に分けてレッスンを受けたい」と言ってあり、時間を気にしなくていいという認識は伝え済み、ということで、次へ進もうとする先生の言葉を何度もSpotify無料プランのCMみたいに遮りながら、勝手にしゃべり続けさせてもらった。
おしゃべりがしやすい先生はありがたい。
特にレアジョブではカッチリと教材を進めていくマニュアルのようなので、時間内で１教材を終わらせようとどんどん進める先生が多い。
でも前回の「Religion」のレッスンで、コチラがよくしゃべるせいか全部終わらず結果的に2回に分かれたところ、2回目ではディスカッションレッスンとなりなかなか良かったので、今後も毎回こうやって2回に分ける前提にしようと決めた。
また、「言いたいことを正しく表すとどういう英文になるか」というのも、先生に尋ねてチャットボックスに書いてもらうのが、これまでのオンライン英会話レッスンでの王道のやり方だけど、これからはAIを活用し、オンラインレッスンは人相手にしゃべる練習の場として活用する方が効率が良い、と割り切った。
レッスン中はあまり迷信が思いつかず、あとでGPTに挙げてもらい「ハイハイありましたね」が上記のとおり。
教材の方では「good luck」の例文として、
“In Japan, people think that seeing a spider in the morning is good luck."
とあったけれど、これは初めて聞いた。
爪をいつ切るかとか、いちいち振り回されたくない。でも気にしてしまう。それが迷信・・・。
