今月の英会話タイムトライアルの旅はN.Y.州
今月は分かりやすいN.Y.州。
カウントダウンがあるからなんだろうなぁと想像。
まずは電車での行き方から。
以前にも「何番線で乗り換えます」のフレーズはタイムトライアルに登場したから、今でも「ゴガクル」のサイトで時々テストをしながら復習してますよ！
<行き方>

“Can I get there by four?"
“The easiest way to get to Wall Street is by bus."
“I’m trying to get to J.F.K. airport."
<電車の乗り換え方>

“The train for Times Square is at track two."
“What’s the name of the next stop?" ※"station"は通過駅も含まれるのでこういう案内の時は"stop"が良い
“It’s three stops from here, right?"
“Then, transfer to the Red line." ※"change"はすぐ目の前などの簡単な乗り換えの時
<徒歩での所要時間と駅直結の表現>

“Times Square is about a 20-minute walk from the hotel."
“Is it a long walk?"
“The Empire state building is a short walk from here."
“Rockefeller Center is directly connected to the station."
次の週はアイススケートをベースにして色々な表現の練習。
「やっぱりアレだよね、Rockefeller Centerとかのアイススケートリンクでの会話が後で出てくるんだろうね、きっと。」と聴きながら想像した。
<～が出来るようになる “know/learn how to ～">

“I don’t know how to speak Spanish."
“I don’t know how to write in English."
“When I was young, I learned how to ski."
“I want to learn how to ice-skate." ※アイススケートをする（動詞）：ice-skate
“What’s the trick to ice-skating?" ※trick to ～（動詞でも名詞でも良さそう）：～のコツ
アイススケートに絡め、靴（等）を借りる表現を “rent" や “borrow" 以外で。
お金が絡むか考えて言い分けるのは面倒だから、とても便利。

“May I have/use that?"
“Can I use that shoehorn?" ※靴ベラ：shoehorn
“We need skates." ※スケート靴：skaktes（shoesは不要）
“How much are skates for one hour?"
アイススケートの靴を基本に、サイズの言い方や履き心地の表現も。
“What’s your shoe size?"

“In centimeters, my shoe size is 24 cm."
“These shoes are a little tight."
“These are a little loose."
“These are just right."
「上手」とか「練習しよう」という表現も。これもきっとアイススケートをしながらの会話だな・・・と思いながら練習 。
そして後半にやはりアイススケートの会話練習があったけれど、ジェニーさんの「N.Y.訛り」というのは私にはよくわからなかった。
それよりも、リンクで後ろから背中を押されたスティーブ先生の「ウッヒャッヒャ～」という声が、何度聞いても面白かった。
<“be good at" と “be good with" の使い分け>

～ “at" は後ろが具体的なアクティビティやスポーツや音楽 ～
“My dad is good at finding bargains."
～ “with" は後ろが分野や「～に強い・弱い」～
“My uncle is good with numbers."
“My grandfather is not good with crowds."

be good with（「扱う」のニュアンス）

<上手になる、する>

“I learned grammar mostly. But my grammar is really rusty."
“I haven’t had a conversation in English in a long time."
最後に、N.Y.の名所と訪問は、今後の旅行の参考になる。
名所の名前は、テキストが無いので綴り方とか大文字・小文字とか冠詞の有無とか、間違っている可能性大。
まぁ気にしないことにしよう。

“This place has so much history."
“Do you know much about Eris Island?" → “I don’t know much about Eris Island."
↑この言い方、何度も出てきているのになかなか覚えられない・・・

“I don’t know much about the history behind it."

“We have to take the stairs to get to the observation deck."
“There’re 77 stairs to get to the shrine."
