多読 21：Robin Hood (Level:3)

次は森の英雄、ロビン・フッド

Level３は自分にとってかなり良いレベルだったので、結構色々と読んできた。
で、このレベルは「Dracula（吸血鬼ドラキュラ）」で終わりにし、Level４の本へ移ろうと思っていた。
しかしeステーションの検索画面でLevel４の本を探してみると、私の好みの「物語系」の本がほとんど無い・・・。

寂しくなり、やっぱりもっと物語が読みたかったので、Level３で検索を掛け、読んでいない本から何冊かをまた自分のリストに登録した。
だって興味のないジャンルだと飽きるし・・・。

という訳で、次もLevel３で「Robin Hood（ロビン・フッド）」にした。
読みやすさのレベルの数字が「ドラキュラ」より小さいから、今度はあまり知らない語彙もなくサクサク読めることを期待して。
だって「ドラキュラ」はあの通り、知らない語彙が多過ぎたし！！

知らない or あやふやな単語

・outwit：〔より賢明・巧妙な方法で〕～の裏をかく、〔～を〕出し抜く
　　ex) However they never harmed" their rich victims. Instead they outwitted them.

・hideout：〔身を隠すための〕隠れ家、潜伏場所、アジト
　　ex) That evening, at their hideout in the forest, they had a big dinner to celebrate Will’s return.

・intensely：猛烈に、激しく
　　ex) One of the men looked at Will intensely, then quickly left the room.

・embrace：抱き合う、抱擁する
　　ex) At last Will embraced his mother and father again and his two sisters, and everyone cried for joy.

・sum：お金の金額
・dignity：尊厳、品格
　　ex) My daughter is one of the most beautiful girls in England, so we must agree on a sum that respects her beauty and dignity.

・notion：意見、見解
　　ex) “I am not interested in these silly romantic notions" said the Sheriff arrogantly.

・regiment：連帯
　　ex) “We have caught the soldier who ran away from his regiment," replied the messenger.

・gallow：絞首台、絞首刑
　　ex) I have promised the poor boy that I will be there at the gallows with him tomorrow.

・rogue：悪漢、ごろつき
　　ex) He thought about Robin Hood’s words: “the three rogues sent to kill Allan Clare. . ."

・Court：王宮、宮廷
　　ex) Christabel would be free to marry someone of the Court, maybe even a member of the Royal Family.

・wicked：不道徳な、危険な
　　ex) His small, black eyes shone, and his thin lips formed into a wicked smile.

・blessing：承認、賛成
　　ex) Of course, my sister, you have my blessing.

・in stark contrast：全く対照的に
　　ex) She was wearing a beautiful white dress which was in stark contrast with the sadness in her eyes.

・nobleman：貴族
・lighten：〔荷物・負担などを〕軽くする
　　ex) “Ah maybe this is our chance to help some rich nobleman lighten his bags," said Robin.

・carefree：気苦労の無い、きままな
　　ex) My name is Sir Richard of the Plain and I was once a rich and carefree man.

・pardon：許し、寛容
　　ex) He said he would pardon Herbert if I paid him a large sum of money.

・debt：借金、負債
　　ex) “Thank you my friend!" shouted Sir Richard as he rode away to pay off his debts and save his son.

・shepherd：羊飼い
　　ex) Robin and his group dressed up as shepherds.

・bishop：司教、司祭
　　ex) He ordered his men to take all the Bishop’s money.

・tinker：（金物の）修理屋
　　ex) A tinker called Jasper lived there with his family.

・warrant：許可証
　　ex) First he got a special warrant signed by the King.

・order：指令、命令
　　ex) I have an order for his arrest in my pocket.

・slurr：不明瞭に発音する
　　ex) “Ah my friend," slurred the tinker.

・commit：罪などを〕犯す、〔悪事を〕はたらく
・unjust：不公平な、不正な
・deed：行い
　　ex) He was cruel and bloodthirsty and committed a lot of unjust deeds.

・startle ～：～をびっくりさせる
　　ex) A bird flew at Sir Guy’s face and startled him.

・nobility：貴族階級
・clergy：聖職者、僧侶
　　ex) The nobility and clergy hated him because they had to pay whenever they passed through
Sherwood Forest.

・troop：軍隊
　　ex) The King decided to send his troops into Sherwood Forest to look for Robin Hood.

・state：状態
　　ex) He was horrified when he saw the terrible state of England and his people.

・treason：反逆、裏切り
・reclaim ～：～の返還を要求する
　　ex) He set off immediately for Nottingham Castle to arrest his brother John for treason and reclaim his title to the throne.

・volley：一斉射撃
　　ex) With a volley of arrows, they helped while Robin’s men easily defeated his soldiers.

・proclaim：宣言する
　　ex) John was arrested and Richard was once more proclaimed King of England.

・intention：意図
　　ex) His intentions sound noble.

・generosity：気前の良さ
　　ex) “With the generosity of holy people like you, I can feed the poor," replied Robin calmly.

・unjustly：不当に
　　ex) I pardon you for any crimes you have been unjustly accused of.

・ballad：〔伝承物語詩の〕バラッド◆中世の終わりころにイギリスやアイルランドで流行し、19世紀まで続いた物語詩。音楽を付けて歌われることが多かった。
　　ex) In the early ballads, Robin Hood is a countryman.

本の感想（ネタバレ注意）

うーん・・・なんかビミョー。
フワフワした感じの内容で、何が言いたいのかなー？みたいな。
出だしからして、「もうこの辺の話は前提として知っているよね？」といった感じではっきりしないまま始まり、途中の様々なエピソードについても、この後どう話に絡んでくるんだろうと思いながら読んでいったら、結局最後まで何の関係もなかった。
3つのカップルの同時結婚式も「よし、みんなでやろう、オー！」ってな感じでとても短絡的だし、妻のマリアンが森で集団暮らしをするなんて・・・！？（ただし暮らしの様子は一切出てこない）
Level３ということで色々文章を簡単にして内容をはしょっていったらこうなっちゃったのかなぁ。

平均して１ページに１個の知らない単語、という感じだったので、多読としては理想的だったとは思う。
お子ちゃま過ぎる挿絵はちょっと耐えられなかった。
最近は本のページ数が増えてきて、クタクタなので聞き読みから先の各勉強はしていない。
そのうちこの「語彙チェック」も省略するようになるだろう。
今回もページ数が多いせいで調べる語彙が多くてすっかり疲れてしまった。
無駄なエピソードをバッサリ切ってくれればもっと楽だったのに～！
