多読 26：A Christmas Carol (Level:3)

今度は有名なクリスマス定番作品

Level３で今のところ読むリストに登録してある残りの本は、3冊だった。
ここ２冊がオリジナルストーリーで面白くなかったので、今度は落ち着いた感じの名作モノにしようと思った。
３冊のうちそういうタイプのものは、「A Christmas Carol（クリスマス・キャロル）」と「Great Expectations（大いなる遺産）」の二つだった。
どちらもディケンズ作。どちらも文字数が約10000語。どちらも超有名な名作。違いとしては、「キャロル」の方はストーリーをおおまかに知っていて、「遺産」の方は全く知らない。

どちらからにしようか迷い、結局無難そうな「キャロル」を先にすることにした。
でも、ディケンズが２冊残っているのかー。もしディケンズが、「私にとってのオスカー・ワイルド」（← 全く受け付けない！！）だったらイヤだなぁ。
と、心配しつつも、この話は知っているので安心して読んだ。

知らない or あやふやな単語

・stave：（詩の）節　[stéiv]

・Bah：ベー！、フン！、ヘン！（軽蔑・不賛成・非難）　[bɑ / bæ]
・humbug：ばかばかしい！くだらない！　[hʌ́mbʌ̀g]
　　ex) “Bah, humbug!” said Scrooge.

・cross：(形) ご機嫌斜めの、イライラした、怒りっぽい
　　ex) “And why are you so cross, Uncle?”

・branch：枝　[bræntʃ / brɑntʃ]
・holly：ヒイラギ　[hɑ́li ]
　　ex) If I could, I would make sure that every fool who walks around saying ‘Merry Christmas’ was boiled with his own Christmas pudding and a branch of holly put through his heart!”

・workhouse：救貧院　[wə́ːkhàus]
　　ex) “Are there still any workhouses?”

・nor：AもBも～でない　[nɔr]
　　ex) “No, it is not ‘convenient’ for me. Nor is it fair."

・pigtail：弁髪、おさげ髪　[pígtèil]
　　ex) It looked just like Marley; the same face, the same pigtail down his neck.

・wound：windの過去形・過去分詞形　巻く、巻き付ける
　　ex) There was a long piece of cloth wound around its head and chin.

・a lump of ～：一塊の～
　　ex) ・・・,or a badly-cooked potato…or even a lump of cheese!

・hold on tight to ～：～をしっかりつかむ　
　　ex) “Aghh!” cried Scrooge. He held on tight to his chair.

・mankind：人類、人間　[mǽnkáind]
　　ex) Mankind should have been my business!

・ass：ロバ　[ǽs]
　　ex) Outside stood a large man with a black beard in a colored robe, leading an ass.

・goose：ガン、ガチョウ　[gúːs]
　　ex) Then another young boy and girl came in, shouting that they had smelt their goose cooking!

・crutch：松葉杖　[krʌ́tʃ]
　　ex) He was carrying a little crutch and had an iron frame around his legs.

・dust ～：～のほこりを払う　[dʌ́st]
　　ex) Martha dusted the hot plates.

・say grace：食前に感謝の祈りをささげる
　　ex) Bob said grace and then Mrs. Cratchit picked up the knife and started cutting the steaming goose.

・bang：〔バンと音を立てて〕打つ、たたく　[bǽŋ]
　　ex) Tiny Tim banged his knife on the table and cried “Hurrah!” in his little voice.

・disagreeable：気難しい、付き合いにくい [dìsəgriəbəl]
　　ex) Is it a disagreeable animal?

・ignorance：無知、無学　[ígnərəns]
　　ex)The boy’s name is Ignorance.

・"I mean it."：（冗談ではなく）本気で言っているんだよ
　　ex) I didn’t mean it.

・half-a-crown：半クラウン（通貨の単位）
　　ex) If you come back in less than five minutes, I will give you half-a-crown!

本の感想（ネタバレ注意）

１万語と結構な文字数の割に、知らない単語があまり無いのには驚いた。あえてかなり易しい単語やフレーズを選んで書かれている印象だった。
お陰で非常に読みやすくサクサクと読み進んだし、何より読み終わってから単語を調べるのが楽で助かった。
アレめんどくさいんだよねー。
ビミョーに、古い言葉なのかな？と思われる、全く見たことのないような単語が含まれていた。

有名なクリスマスキャロルを初めてきちんと最初から最後まで読んだけれど・・・・いや～、キリスト教徒のための本って感じだったなぁ。
かなりひねくれているワタシとしては・・・「出来過ぎ。」
クリスマスのゴーストたちが訪れる前の、最初の頃のスクルージの言動があまりにもひどいので、改心した後の言動との差があり過ぎてポカーン。
そこまで変わるか、フツー？

もっと素直に読める純粋な心があれば、楽しめたかな。
でもまぁいいお話でした、ハイ。
