多読 12：The Secret Garden (Level:2)

好きな物語は捨てがたい

最近、もっとレベルの高いものをどんどん読んでいかないと効率が悪すぎる、と改めて思い始めた。
そこで易しいレベル２は、前回のホームズの本でもう終わりにしてさっさと次のレベルへ行こう、と思った。
でも、大好きな「The Secret Garden（秘密の花園）」があったので、「うーん、やっぱりあと1冊！」と思い、バババーッと大急ぎで読んだ。

結果として、やっぱり読んで良かった。日本語の本を持っていて何度も何度も読んで十分知っている内容であっても、好きな話は何度でも楽しめる。
しかも文章が読みやすかったお陰でとてもいい感じに読了した。

知らない or あやふやな単語

・roll by：〔車両が〕通り過ぎる
　　ex) Mary watched the English landscape roll by.

・go wandering：あてもなくさまよう
　　ex) Outside, you can go wandering as much as you like.

・crooked：〔考え方などが〕ゆがんだ　[krúkid]
　　ex) Craven is a crooked man.

・eat up：食べ尽くす
　　ex) You eat up, and play.

・manor：荘園、領主の館　[mǽnər]
　　ex) I mean the gardens surrounding the manor.

・clip：はさみなどで～を〕切る、刈る
　　ex) There also were flower beds and evergreens clipped into strange shapes.

・mound：盛り土　[máund]
　　ex) The bird was standing on a rusty ring on a small mound of earth.

・hind leg：後ろ足　[háind]
　　ex) Around him were several robins and rabbits sitting on their hind legs.

・weed：雑草を取る
・rake：熊手で掃く［かき集める］　[réik]
・seed：種をまく
　　ex) They weeded and raked leaves. They planted seeds and pulled out dead flowers.

・flower bed：花壇
　　ex) They watered plants and made flower beds.

・shut in：閉じこもる
　　ex) “It’s the best fun I ever had in my life – shut in here and wakening up a garden.”

・hump：こぶ　[hʌ́mp]
　　ex) I’m growing a hump on my back.

・windowsill：窓台　[wíndousìl]
　　ex) She placed two potted roses on the windowsill.

・all at onece：一斉に、突然
　　ex) “All at once, I remember what I looked like that day."

・boredom：退屈、倦怠　[bɔ́rdəm]
　　ex) He never felt anything but sadness and boredom.

・dip：沈む、浸す　[díp]
　　ex) He saw birds come and dip their heads in it.

・gasp for breath：息を弾ませる
　　ex) His strange, gray eyes made Mr. Craven gasp for breath.

・torn down：取り壊す
　　ex) Mr. Craven told his servants that the walls of the garden should be torn down.

・withered：しぼむ　[wíðərd] 
　　ex) The flowers withered, as well.

本の感想（ネタバレ注意）

挿絵が実に可愛い。
本当は主人公のメアリーはもっとぶすーっとふてくされて超かわいくないはずだし、ディッコンがこの絵のような長髪王子様ヘアではないはず。
でも可愛い挿絵の本は余計愛着が増す。あのショボショボな絵のホームズシリーズも見習ってもらいたい。
BGMも落ち着いていていい感じだった。
また、Chapterの間に2か所、ちょっとした参考の読み物ページが入っていた。一つは当時のインドの子供の状況、もう一つはイングリッシュガーデンについて。これも良かった。

音声の方も聴いてみると、実に素晴らしい。
BGMはごく一部を除き付いていないけれど、お陰で英語が聞きやすい。
さらに鳥のさえずりが入っていて本当に庭にいる気分。
ナレーションも綺麗な声で聴きやすい。
すっかり気に入った。

本当の話よりかなり短く簡素にしてある本なのがちょっともったいないけれど、とても良くまとまった本だと思った。
「Daddy-Long-Legs」は、結局英語の本を読んだ後にまた日本語の方の本も読み返して楽しんだ。
こっちも日本語の本を引っ張り出して読みたくなった。たぶんまた読むだろう。
